Welcome to the Japanese Cultural Association of Manitoba's Digital Archive Resource.

Welcome to the educational space and online resource centre for the history of Japanese Canadians in Manitoba. A majority of the Japanese came to Manitoba during the Second World War with the forced removal to sugar beet farms or after the war from internment centres. Today there continues to be an influx of immigrants from Japan.

This project began in 2019 by the Japanese Cultural Association of Manitoba to act as a gateway for education of Japanese Canadians in Manitoba and enable the preservation of our rich history. This site provides an opportunity to explore the history of Japanese Canadians, conduct your own research or, as a teacher, locate available teaching resources for your classroom.

This online resource centre has several components

  • We ask that you create an account with us to have access to our digital archive, which has a collection of oral histories, photos, documents, newspaper articles, videos and a bibliography of books.
  • A connection to Manitoba history with resources of personal interviews, videos on family histories, Manitoba Moments, mural and theses.
  • For elementary and secondary educators, this site provides not only a digital archive but links to resources such as teaching strategies and lesson plans.
  • Links to related sites such as Japanese Canadian community organizations, museums, historical projects, Japanese Canadian newspapers.
  • Share your story, videos and photos to contribute the preservation of our history and identity.
